What a lovely piece! As a retired librarian, I really enjoyed your musings on books, both as physical objects and for their content. I do notice that for me, getting rid of books is much more difficult that it seems to be for you– maybe I need to remember that hopefully someone else will give them a happy home?!

I have done a few purges; still buy books new but am leaning more and more to used books. I moved from NYC to CT 15 years ago and still have not opened 4 cartons of books. I recognize that they should be given away if in 15 years I never felt the urge to see them again. However, my extensive bookshelves are chock full. This article echoes my own feelings about books in general.
