Bellewood

My essay on childhood in the 1950s and 1960s in a subdivision called Bellewood, in North Syracuse, New York, went online today in Poydras Review, poydrasreview.com. Family members are quoted, and a letter my mother wrote in 1962. Music in school, field trips, and boys in the jungle.

  1. Hi Bob, this is your old friend from Niskayuna, Carol Vermilyea. I have just started following your blog, and have enjoyed your last two postings very much. Looking forward to reading more of your work, Carol

  2. Hi Bob,
I lived next door to you in Bellewood – the youngest of the 3 Smith children you mention in your essay. Which, by the way, is lovely! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve shared my own stories about the fogger & the creek.
I stopped by Charlottesville recently and visited Vern & Anne Raque. Their son Tom & I were great friends and Anne was always like a second mom to me. Anne was as lovely as ever. But I’m afraid time has changed one or both of us a bit, or maybe the uneasiness of present politics is too close to all of us.
Anyways I was going to try to look you up as well, but with time at a premium, finding your lovely essay was as far as I got.
Take care, thanks for the memories 🙂
